Colonial Middle School Reviews

I must say I am surprised at just how little communication there is between parents and students. The online access is supposed to be the main source of communication but often is not updated for months at a time. I often have NO clue what is going on, until it is too late and the marking period is over. Teachers rarely if ever email me to let me know if something is wrong. I am calling the counselor constantly asking if there is anything more that I can do. I really wish I could pull my child out right this minute but have to wait as it is so late in the year. I notice others say they receive notes home and emails, I wish I could say the same. Sadly, not unless I email/call first. I feel this is a complete utter waste of a year for my son.

Our daughter is a 7th grader at this school. She loves the activities and is involved in the arts and music here. She has excelled and thrived here. She has been on the honor role all throughout her attendance here, and this is due to the teachers paying attention to her. Teacher interaction with parents is very high, and the staff are very available to parents. We communicated via e-mail, phone, daily notes home, and in person. You see the teachers at extra-curricular activities and other events. The technology in the classrooms (computers, math tools, computerized boards, etc) is astoundingly high end and new. They have modern, up to date classes like 'Technical Ed, advanced computer classes, etc.) This school exceeds anything a private school could offer. The entire school district excels at not only test scores, but real-life education.

Lots of great teachers, small classes and plenty of activities for the kids. They treat the kids with lots of respect, and are working very hard at standarizing rules and treatment (i.e., same consequences for an action no matter what class/ teacher).

CMS has been a great academic environment. The extra curriculum activities are diveresed and well managed. All CMS staff are friendly, helpful and resourceful, however I would like to see more rapid communication to parents in regards to short and long term projects as well as information on test dates so that parents can be aware of their time management and teach them how to prioritize, manage and balance all their school acitivities. Parents want to stay involved in our childrens academics but often times are not aware of what to follow up with. It would help to have all assignments, test and projects posted on line.

Colonial Middle School is an amazing school. The academic programs are wonderful. In addition to the academic programs, students can participate in numerous extracurricular activities such as chorus, band, the school musical, and different sports. Not only are the students involved in the school, but so are their parents. CMS is constantly filled with hard-working parents. CMS is really a great school.

Teacher to student ratio is very good. Also advisors are really on top of helping set goals for students.

I'm a first year parent at the Middle School, and a sixth year parent in the school district. My son likes it, although the 'rules' at times seem a bit silly to him, and to me. He is having some difficulty transitioning to being the 'responsible' party. He's used to being told what to do, where to go and when to go. We've already lost the student ID. Academically, it looks quite good. Watch out for those projects, and a lot of homework! The Red Team is wonderful!
